ARSENAL v FULHAM, 4-1 Wed 24 Aug 2005
A somewhat misleading gloss was given to the scoreline at Highbury by sustained late pressure from Arsenal, with the unlikely figure of Pascal Cygan also scoring twice.
The Gunners had taken time to shake off their Stamford Bridge hangover in this Barclays Premiership encounter, with Fulham seizing an early lead through Claus Jensen, who punished Kolo Toure's mistake, while Lauren was denied from the penalty spot by on-loan goalkeeper Tony Warner.
However, Cygan headed home an equaliser - only his second goal for the club - before Arsenal were rescued by their new captain as he led by example in taking his all-time tally to 184 goals for the club, just one behind Wright.
Arsene Wenger dropped young Swiss defender Philippe Senderos for this game, not even including him on the bench, with Cygan preferred instead.
Ashley Cole wasted the chance to pick out the unmarked figure of Henry after just two minutes and when the Frenchman was brought down by Zat Knight soon afterwards after an excellent pass by Alexander Hleb, he earned his side a penalty.
But Henry never takes penalties when he has been brought down. So up stepped Lauren, who had previously never missed a spot-kick in his career.
Despite having scored in pressure games against Tottenham, as well as in the Olympics and the African Nations Cup, this time his penalty was weakly struck and Warner was able to save easily enough.
The on-loan keeper produced an even better save from Cesc Fabregas but Arsenal were duly made to pay for their profligacy on 23 minutes, when Fulham seized a surprise lead.
Toure failed to clear Tomasz Radzinski's low cross and Jensen pounced on the loose ball to clip a superb shot into the top corner, past Jens Lehmann's despairing dive.
Arsenal were guilty of trying to walk the ball into the net but even Warner could not hold them at bay forever.
With 13 minutes left before the interval, Dennis Bergkamp curled in an inviting free-kick and, as the Fulham rearguard remained static, Cygan beat two team-mates to meet the ball at close range and head past the exposed Fulham keeper.
Still Arsenal could take nothing for granted at the back though, with Luis Boa Morte producing a defence-splitting pass that Brian McBride wasted by firing his shot over the top, while Steed Malbranque also missed the target.
After the break, when Niclas Jensen's superb ball down the left flank reached Radzinski, McBride should have done much better with the ensuing cross, which Cygan failed to cut out.
Instead, the USA international scrambled his effort wide and he was promptly given a lesson in finishing by Henry.
Reyes clipped a ball over the top of the Fulham defence but Henry still had to bring it under control before firing a superb shot past Warner.
McBride was spurred into action, forcing Lehmann to produce an excellent reaction save from his header, which once again showed Arsenal's vulnerability in the air.
At times, especially when Reyes was in possession, Arsenal's approach play was close to its mesmeric best.
But while Warner denied Bergkamp and Gilberto, the class of Henry was evident for all to see as he sped onto substitute Mathieu Flamini's ball to calmly chip the keeper.
Cygan then put a rather flattering gloss on the scoreline as he thumped home his second goal of the game from close range after Toure had failed to convert Bergkamp's inviting cross.

CHELSEA v ARSENAL, 1-0 Sun 21 Aug 2005
The Ivory Coast striker, who scored twice against the Gunners as the Blues claimed the Community Shield, was introduced at half-time for Hernan Crespo and once again proved to be a matchwinner, although in somewhat fortuitous circumstances.
While he wasted one clear opening at Stamford Bridge, Drogba made Arsenal pay for a lack of concentration with 17 minutes remaining as Frank Lampard sent a quick free-kick into the Arsenal area and the ball ricocheted off his knee before bobbling past the unfortunate Jens Lehmann.
Only Drogba's indecision in front of goal saved Arsenal from further punishment after a misjudged Philippe Senderos pass-back in the final minute.
Thierry Henry lacked genuine support up front, with manager Arsene Wenger having initially taken the rare step of selecting Robert Pires to play in behind his captain, while Alexander Hleb was handed his full debut on the left flank.
However, it was Chelsea who made a storming start and they almost seized the lead within the first two minutes.
Frank Lampard's through-ball sent Damien Duff scampering through the centre but Lehmann was out in a flash to dive at his feet and block the opening, with Senderos clearing the lingering danger.
Chelsea still won a corner and Lehmann was fortunate when Freddie Ljungberg cleared off the line after the Arsenal ‘keeper had only been able to take the sting off John Terry's powerful header.
After that fiery opening, the game rather settled down and Chelsea found opportunities hard to come by as Kolo Toure was efficiently shadowing Hernan Crespo.
Arsenal were able to start dominating possession, although chances were not exactly plentiful, with Henry steering one shot wide and Ljungberg firing another past the far post from a tight angle.
That was the Swede's last meaningful act as he was forced off injured after just 24 minutes, with Robin van Persie replacing him and Pires being switched out to the right flank.
Van Persie offered more of a direct attacking threat but it was Chelsea, who were mainly relying on searching long balls fired to the flanks, that threatened next as Lehmann blocked Arjen Robben's close-range shot with his face.
Otherwise, it was all rather cagey but there was at least some spice with the arrival of Drogba as he replaced Crespo to start giving Senderos a real physical test.
Drogba blazed his first half-chance wildly into the crowd but Chelsea have strength in abundance on the bench, with Shaun Wright-Phillips and Michael Essien also entering the fray.
There was little immediate improvement as Arsenal still pressed, with Gilberto’s header being grasped by Petr Cech, while van Persie flicked a volley wide.
However, Arsenal lost concentration when it mattered most in failing to react to Lampard's free-kick as Drogba left Senderos in his wake and beat Lehmann from close range, albeit off his right shin as he failed to control the ball.
That should have prompted a prolonged late assault by Arsenal but Henry, who had one shot pushed around the post by Cech, was still a rather lone figure up front.
It was instead Drogba who should have scored again only to aim his effort straight at Lehmann after Senderos' slip.

ARSENAL v NEWCASTLE UNITED, 2-0 Sun 14 Aug 2005
The Magpies battled gamely for 50 minutes following the dismissal of Jermaine Jenas after half an hour for a lunge on Gilberto.
But with 10 minutes to go they went a goal down through Thierry Henry's penalty, awarded for a foul on Freddie Ljungberg by Charles N'Zogbia.
And substitute Robin van Persie made sure of the points for the Gunners six minutes later, finishing Ljungberg's pass from an acute angle.
Newcastle, whose defeat at Highbury last season coincided with the start of Craig Bellamy's bust-up with manager Graeme Souness, were therefore left with yet more painful memories from north London.
With his team desperately short of strikers, Souness had fielded a five-man midfield - at least until Jenas' dismissal - and that enabled them to hold their own with Arsenal early on.
Indeed, it was the visitors who created the first clear chance as Jenas' through-ball gave Alan Shearer a sight of goal, only for the centre-forward to fire his shot just wide of the far post.
However, it was not until 13 minutes before half-time that the match burst into life as Jenas brought down Gilberto with a two-footed tackle.
He pleaded innocence but was immediately sent off by referee Steve Bennett following instructions to officials to cut out tackles which endanger players' safety.
Newcastle responded with a 'goal' ruled out for offside against Shearer, while Shay Given saved a snap-shot from Kolo Toure and Henry headed just wide.
However, with Newcastle now solely intent upon securing a draw and with new signings Scott Parker and Emre excellent in midfield, Arsenal were facing a battle to make the breakthrough in the second half.
Given and Steven Taylor required treatment after a collision as they defended a dangerous free-kick by Dennis Bergkamp, with the Newcastle keeper appearing to twist his neck as he landed.
Both players were able to continue but Newcastle remained under pressure as the industrious Parker was required to fling himself into a last-ditch block to deny Ljungberg from close range.
The Swede then escaped a booking despite clipping Emre from behind, while Henry earned a corner even though Given did excellently to deflect the ball behind off the striker as he raced clean through.
The decisions were going for Arsenal, but still they needed to score.
However, Toure's long-range effort was saved, Taylor produced a vital interception and then Given raced out swiftly to save at Ljungberg's feet as he scampered onto Henry's flick.
Arsenal brought on Alexander Hleb and Van Persie for Bergkamp and Pires, while Kieron Dyer was replaced by N'Zogbia, but it was the removal of Shearer for James Milner that was rather more surprising.
Newcastle's resistance was finally undone with 10 minutes left, when N'Zogbia was adjudged to have caught Ljungberg from behind as he burst into the penalty area.
Referee Bennett pointed immediately to the spot and, although Given dived the right way, Henry's penalty was sweetly struck and sped inside the right-hand upright.
Newcastle pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were caught on the
break with three minutes left as Arsenal broke at pace for Ljungberg to cross
for Van Persie to beat Given at the near post

'Chelsea Are No Better Than Arsenal Really'
Monday August 08 2005
There are some people who are suggesting that Chelsea have all-but wrapped up the title before a ball has even been kicked. But that's foolish talk and anyone who believes that obviously knows little about football and how hard it is to win back-to-back titles.
Arsenal may have lost to Chelsea on Sunday but Arsene Wenger, and anyone else who watched that game, will have walked away thinking there's absolutely nothing to choose between the two sides. Chelsea were not better than Arsenal on the day - the scoreline flattered them and was simply the result of two good pieces of finishing.
I was quite impressed with both teams - I thought the fitness levels and technical ability showed that both are very much ready for the new Premiership season. Wenger might not be too happy with the result, but both managers will have been very happy with the running, the passing and the sharpness of their players.
We saw exactly what we would have expected from both teams - Arsemal were studious, deliberate and the ball rarely left the ground. For them it's all about possession and movement. I was impressed with Alexander Hleb when he came on, just as I was when I first saw him two years ago playing for Stuttgart. He looks equally comfortable on either flank.
It was impossible to tell from that game whether the Gunners will miss Patrick Vieira too much - there's no doubt that the first-choice pairing will be Gilberto and Cesc Fabregas, and I think we saw as soon as the Brazilian came on that his presence has a steadying influence on the team.
So we learned little that we didn't already know about Arsenal, and the same applies to Chelsea. Criticism of their tactics has been a little unfair - they don't just play long-ball football, they like to mix it up a little bit. They have variation, a Plan B that sometimes the Gunners are lacking.
Talking of what the Gunners are lacking, I am as massively surprised as everyone in the game that they're not showing any interest in Michael Owen. In fact, I find it extraordinary that clubs are not queueing up to sign him. He would practically guarantee 20 goals a season and I would have thought that the way Arsenal play - with speed and without too many high balls - would suit him down to the ground.
But obviously Arsene thinks that in Robin van Persie, Jose Reyes and Dennis Bergkamp he has enough options, and who are we to argue?
Chelsea might have won the league comfortably last season, but winning back-to-back titles is something else. Look at the quality teams Wenger has put together without achieving that feat. There will be no surprise element and no waiting for blips this time around.
Teams must improve again to win again and Arsenal and Man United will both think they can push them all the way, especially if Chelsea have problems with injuries or suspensions. Imagine a Blues team without Frank Lampard, Claud Makelele or John Terry for a long period of time. That wouldn't be a team that's unbeatable.

Song signs on for Gunners
Tom Adams - Sky Sports (11 Aug 2005)
Arsenal have continued their commitment to recruiting the continent's best talent by wrapping up a loan deal for Bastia's Alexandre Song. The 18-year-old has impressed boss Arsene Wenger whilst on trial at Highbury over the summer, and has now been handed an extended chance to prove his credentials with the FA Cup winners.
Song appeared in The Gunners' pre-season tour to Austria and leaves Bastia after they suffered relegation from Le Championnat last season. The versatile stopper will initially join on a one year loan deal, worth a rumoured ?500,000 (£344,000), although Wenger will have the opportunity to make the arrangement permanent for ?4 million (£2.7 million) at the end of the season after the Corsican club confirmed an accord had been reached.
After announcing himself as one of the foremost talents in Ligue 1 Song has attracted interest from the likes of Lyon and Internazionale, however he will now be hoping to be the latest import from France to thrive under Wenger's astute guidance. With developing talents Philippe Senderos and Kolo Toure both impressing in defensive roles, Song's capture could be Wenger's first market move to compensate for the departure of Patrick Vieira.
靠Gilberto,Fabregas,Flamini?
